Balyasny Asset Management (BAM) is seeking an experienced Geopolitical Market Analyst to join our Geopolitical Risk & Strategy team in London. The role will report to BAM’s Chief Global Affairs officer and focus on the intersection of European and Middle Eastern political, economic, and regulatory developments and their impact on global financial markets. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of EU policy, macroeconomics, and the evolving geopolitical landscape, with a proven ability to translate complex scenarios into actionable investment insights and trade ideas.
You will work closely with BAM’s investment teams across strategies (equity L/S, macro, credit, merger arb), providing real-time analysis, thematic research, and scenario mapping. Your expertise will help identify both risks and opportunities at the sector and company level, with a particular emphasis on how UK, European and Middle Eastern events shape market dynamics and outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Geopolitical Market Analysis: Analyze and interpret European and Middle Eastern political, economic, and regulatory developments—including EU policy, elections, sanctions, and security risks—and assess their impact on global and regional financial markets
- Sector & Company-Level Impact: Map out how geopolitical scenarios affect specific equity sectors and public companies, identifying both tail risks and thematic investment opportunities.
- Research & Communication: Produce and deliver a mix of thematic and quantitative research, including deep-dive reports, real-time market alerts, and concise responses to ad hoc research queries for investment teams.
- Scenario Planning: Develop scenario analyses for key geopolitical events (e.g., elections, policy shifts, regime changes) and communicate likely market outcomes, including cross-asset implications.
- Thought Leadership: Continuously generate innovative research ideas that expand BAM’s capabilities and differentiate us as a thought leader in geoeconomics and market strategy.
- Alternative Data & Early Warning: Monitor and analyze alternative data sources—including social media sentiment, expert networks, and proprietary indicators—to identify early warning signals and emerging trends.
- Collaboration: Work closely with portfolio managers, strategists, and analysts across BAM to integrate geopolitical risk assessments into investment processes and portfolio construction.
Role Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience in global financial markets as a strategist, analyst, or trader at a leading investment bank, hedge fund, asset manager, or policy institution, with a strong focus on Europe and/or the Middle East.
- Policy & Economics Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in EU policy, European macroeconomics, and regulatory frameworks, with a clear understanding of how these factors impact financial markets and investment decisions.
- Sector & Company Analysis: Proven ability to assess the impact of geopolitical developments on equity sectors and public companies, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches.
- Communication: Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills; able to present complex arguments and market scenarios with clarity to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Quantitative Skills: Advanced proficiency in Excel and Bloomberg; experience with data visualization and quantitative modeling a plus.
- Research & Innovation: Capacity to create both big-picture thematic narratives and in-depth quantitative/technical analysis; self-directed and resourceful researcher with a track record of innovative thinking.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Experience delivering actionable insights and value-add commentary to sophisticated institutional investors.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (e.g., in economics, political science, international relations, or finance) strongly preferred.
