About Horizon Engage
Horizon Engage is a New York-based strategic intelligence platform that delivers the clarity global investors need to make smarter decisions.
A founder-run advisory operating and steadily growing since 2003, Horizon Engage counts the senior leadership of the world’s largest energy, renewables and mining companies among its clients. We cover over 70 countries, supported by a network of 100+ in-country experts.
Our team helps clients navigate their most critical questions about governments, policies, and people - through the lens of industry insight and practical, business-focused advice.
The Role
Horizon Engage is seeking an energetic, efficient and affable geopolitical analyst to join our fast-growing Asia-Pacific practice as Regional Director.
The Director will work closely with the Chief Product Officer to guide, commission, edit and deliver regional coverage and support the day-to-day operations of the Asia-Pacific research team and wider firm. No two days will be the same.
In addition to running the team, you will write your own high-quality analysis on the region, its political and economic landscape and its intersection with the global resources industry. You will brief our clients and build relationships with them that support the firm’s editorial and commercial plans.
Key Responsibilities
The Regional Director will have primary responsibility for developing all coverage for the Asia-Pacific region, including:
- Client relations: Maintain clear communication with clients, alongside the Chief Product Officer and our commercial colleagues, to ensure coverage remains relevant in a dynamic regional environment.
- Editorial oversight: Liaise with country contributors to shape coverage across the region, ensuring quality control and client relevance through a wide variety of regular and ad-hoc products. You will maintain oversight of project pipelines from commissioning to delivery.
- Network development: Grow our expert advisor network with a focus on deep subject matter experts with a fingertip feel for the priorities and relative influence of key stakeholders in the national energy sector leadership.
- Regional analysis: Aggregate country-level trends into regional or sub-regional reports that deliver fresh insights about emerging trends connecting multiple investment jurisdictions.
- Support new business development. Attend remote and in-person business development meetings to provide capability demonstrations touching upon any of the Asia-Pacific markets. Coordinate the preparation of tailored verbal and slide deck briefing materials.
- External events: Attend conferences to present our analysis, meet our clients and build networks across the region.
Candidate Profile
- Experience: 7+ years of experience in political risk, intelligence, government affairs or journalism with a focus on Asia-Pacific. Location in the region is a strong advantage; extensive experience living in the region is essential. Deep country and energy sector expertise in Malaysia and/or Indonesia.
- Collaborative approach: You will have strong collaborative capabilities when working remotely, and will thrive in a friendly, fast-growing and busy global team.
- Communication skills: Superb writing, editing and presentation skills are essential. Ability to work to deadline in response to short turnaround requests is a must. Must be comfortable briefing executive-level clients.
- Education: Degree in International Relations, Politics, Economics or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Networking skills: You will bring a strong contacts book you will use to gather high-value intelligence that supports your analysis and your colleagues’ work.
- Sector expertise: Understanding of upstream oil and gas, renewables and/or the mining and metals sector, regional historical and geopolitical trends and domestic social dynamics of key states across the region are all advantages.
- Personalities focus: Horizon Engage has a unique focus on the ‘who’s who’ stakeholder and partnering aspects of commercial opportunity and risk. We are looking for someone who is passionate about this level of analysis.
