Job Description
The primary role of Corporate Affairs is to promote De Beers’ reputation, protect diamond equity and shape an environment conducive to De Beers’ commercial interests. Operating responsibly and being recognized, as a leader in the industry is central to our business model.
Reporting to the International Relations Lead, the International Relations Specialist has a key role in researching stakeholders and key issues to inform an effective management framework.
Through deep insight and technical knowledge, the role is responsible for maintaining our stakeholder engagement system, conducting research and analysis into geopolitical risks and issues across the diamond value chain that affect our objectives, both in the commercial and sustainability space, and be responsible for key internal and external reporting requirements in these areas.
The purpose of the role is to support the team in delivering an effective stakeholder management framework to protect and promote De Beers’ diamond equity through effective engagements.
The role covers engagement with multi-lateral institutions, government stakeholders and the industry organisations to advance De Beers’ strategic interests.
TYPICAL TASKS
Systems development and maintenance
Lead the project management of our stakeholder management system which aligns issues with stakeholder engagement across the Group.
Responsible for maintaining a global map of all key industry bodies and maintain relevant analysis of policy and regulatory changes that may affect De Beers (from mining standards to consumer protection) on the system and act as the key point of contact to support BU representatives.
Reporting Requirements
Responsible for delivering researched reports to all levels of the business, including:
- Weekly reports to the CEO
- De Beers inputs for the Anglo American and De Beers Group internal and external Sustainability Reports
- De Beers Group International Relations reports to Anglo American International Relationships department
- Reports and updates to key internal and external initiatives.
Peer Groups
- Supports in coordination and attendance of relevant peer groups and forums, across both De Beers and Anglo American.
- Industry peer groups/forums
Stakeholder engagement
- Works with Business Unit functions to ensure that they are trained on the stakeholder engagement management system and appropriately supported to meet all reporting and communications requirements, within the timeframes specified.
- Supports key industry and government engagement events, such as the De Beers Diamond Dialogues and Accountability Forums supporting similar regional events, and the organisation of the annual Diamond Conference under the guidance of the International Relations Lead
- Works with and build relationships with peers in key industry organisations
- Works closely with Business Unit peer functions and roles to understand key emerging risks, issues and stakeholder events to support these functions with any group-related activities and/or positions
- Understands and articulates Business Unit contexts, risks and issues to the relevant audiences in the context of government and/or industry related issues.
Research and Communications
- Supports the development and coordination of effective communications plans to reach identified external stakeholders on agreed, strategic risks
- Supports the coordination of resource packs and presentations to support De Beers representatives at external forums on key industry risks as required.
- Research and analyse geopolitical risks and issues and prepare suitable reports reaching the target audience (internal and external) appropriately on articulating the context, issues, challenges, and making thoughtful recommendations, with the support of the International Relations Lead.
- Supports key internal initiatives through providing, research and analysis, that support the advancement of diamond equity and consumer confidence.
- Supports the team in providing in-depth content, research and analytics for key stakeholder and industry initiatives, pertaining to ethical standards, nomenclature, and overall diamond equity and sustainability issues.
- Supports analysis on key risks and developing and articulating a coherent understanding of the divergent and competing interests within the industry on those issues affecting De Beers’ business or confidence in diamonds
- Investigates creative solutions to unplanned events impacting consumer confidence issues in respect of industry issues.
- Supports Building Forever reporting requirements.
- Undertakes research and due diligence to support in writing external facing reports on subjects affecting industry issues, producer and consumer government priorities and challenges, in the context of De Beers and/or industry response and management of key diamond equity issues.
- Monitoring, understanding and communicating key policy, regulatory and industry issues that affect De Beers under the guidance of the International Relations Lead.
- Reviews and contributes to internal and external reports on policy, regulatory and/or sustainability related issue areas.
- Undertakes special projects as required
Qualifications
- Degree or professional qualification in a relevant discipline essential, with a post graduate degree considered an advantage (i.e. government/international relations/development, law, management, sociology, economics etc)
- A proven track record of issue analysis and reporting focused on geopolitical risk management, socio-economic development and corporate sustainability initiatives, and stakeholder relationship management.
- At least two years of experience in a relevant and related function
- A clear instinct for identifying challenges and analysing complex issues essential.
- Fluent in English, with excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent Microsoft Office Suite skills, especially Excel, PowerPoint skills
- A team player with a proven track record of project-management, proactive and results-driven, and able to thrive in a dynamic, cross-cultural business environment
Ability To
- Demonstrate a high level of skill in the creation of briefing materials, report writing and preparation of presentations
- Demonstrate proven analytical skills and attention to detail, including the ability to make decisions in conditions of uncertainty
- Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills
